Tam-Tam

Tam-Tam designs at The Daisy Dell

Tam-Tam are two exciting new designers working in the East End of London, using traditional African wax printed fabrics to create a range of contemporary accessories such as belts and wrist bands.
A beautiful way to liven up a plain black evening dress, white shirt or t-shirt and jeans – great for parties, clubbing and everyday wear.
Each belt is lined with denim, to ensure durability, and can be reversed for another great look.

Tam-Tam are two close friends of mine - please take a look at the photo album of their designs to the right and get in touch with any comments.

If you would like to see more, or would like the chance to buy any of these designs, please visit my ebay shop at the link below.

Cold Skin

Just realised that after all that I didn't mention my absolute favourite book of the last year - Cold Skin by Albert Sanchez Pinol (see link in book list - right). This book starts off as the story of a young, disenchated man, about to take up the position of weatherman and researcher on a tiny, isolated island. Arriving by ship he and the crew who brought him find the cottage he is to live in ruined, and the man whom he is to replace, missing. Desperate to put his past behind him, the young man refuses to leave, despite the strange circumstances, and insists the boat leave without him. As night falls you get the feeling that he might not get to live long enough to regret his decision; suddenly the novel switches from the strange, to the surreal, to the downright bizarre - but just as I started to wonder what on earth I was reading, I realised that I was totally hooked.

What appears from the start to be your classic monster/horror story becomes a profound disection of human nature, prejudice and above all despair, but with odd patches of hope and even eroticism. One of the oddest, most desolute and yet most beautiful books I have ever read, it took me weeks to stop constantly thinking about this novel, and I know I'll re-read it before long.

Please give it a try and see what you think - and if you read let me know. I want to see if it makes anyone else feel the way it did me! (Or am I just a freak.....?).....

Books, books and more books

When I'm not making jewellery I read alot; I work in a bookshop and am constantly buying more than I can ever get through! I'm not a big Da Vinci Code fan I'm afraid, but I do tend to read quite a diverse range of things - from classic literature and sci-fi to kids books, a bit of popular history and science, and my main vice - Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles........

The only thing I hardly read is modern crime as I am a little bit squeamish so if anyone can recommend a good (not too gruesome...) book to get me started then I'd love to hear from you! Having said that I love American Psycho and Bret Easten Ellis in general so I guess I can't be quite as pathetic when it comes to gore as I think.

I love Patricia Highsmith, David Mitchell, Garth Nix, Anne Rice for starters and have recently started to read some Neil Gaiman, and I'm always on the look out for new ideas. Some of my favourite books are listed in my booklist on the right, so please take a look and let me know what you think if you've read them, I'd love to know.
If you haven't I totally recommend them all - I've put brief comments but don't want to give too much away!

At the moment I am reading 'Wicked - The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West' by Gregory Maguire. I wasn't sure what to expect at all (especially as I've somehow managed to never see the film or read the book of The Wizard of Oz on which it's based!), but I am really enjoying it - not very far in yet though so please don't give me any spoilers!
There is currently a Broadway show of the book, which moves to the West End this summer - not usually my kind of think at all, but I think I will definately give it a go? Has anyone seen the U.S. production? What did you think?

The last thing that I read was Embers by Sandor Marai, as I had been on holiday to Hungary, where he was originally from. Again I really enjoyed it although it is slow paced, and the story fairly predictable - it is more about the emotions of the main characters, and the idea of friendship and whether it can last throughout your life, despite the circumstances you might find yourself in, rather than about the actual events the characters live through; before that the book I have enjoyed the most in recent months is Les Liasions Dangerous, the book Dangerous Liasons was based on. It is full of thoroughly vicious and, conversely, rather pathetic characters, sex, scandel and intrigue. Told in the form of letters between the various characters it is very funny, and very addictive (however frustrated you might become with those in it!). Even if you have seen the various film adaptations the book is well worth a read.

The only thing I haven't enjoyed lately? The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova - currently on the UK Richard and Judy Summer read - dull, formulaic and a terrible idea - I won't give away the end, but isn't Dracula supposed to be scary? Kostova's is about as terrifying as a bookworm. (And that's a slight clue there to the rather bizarre twist on Bram Stoker's original character.....). This book may well keep you hooked, with evocative descriptions of Istanbul, Budapest and various parts of Romania - but what started out as a really good read and a novel idea, left me feeling really let down and downright bored at the end..... One of the few books I don't recommend at work! Again let me know what you think - I've met plenty of people that disagree with me (although none of them have read Dracula itself).

Anyway that's my recommendations for this week! Please let me know what you think of my faves, and even better let me know about yours and give me some new ideas - but please, no Dan Brown, I put my foot down on that one!

Next event

Next event - 24th June 2006

My next event is a stall at Courtwood School summer fair, this Saturday, 11am-2pm.

Busy, busy weekend

This weekend just gone has been a busy week in terms of my jewellery business. As well as selling through my website and e-bay shop I also like to rent stalls at fairs/fetes and recently started to think about markets. This weekend I not only had a stall at a local school's summer fair, but also shared a stall with one of my friends at the Sunday (Up) indoor market in Brick Lane. This market runs every sunday, 10am - 5pm; it is full of stalls selling everything from clothes to paella, and is definately well worth a visit (click on the link in My Favourite Places to see more info on the market).

Thanks to Lizzie and Georgie for letting me share their stall, and also to everyone at Ranelagh School for allowing me a stall at their summer fair. I had a great weekend.
